Millions in gold stolen from vault in downtown Rotterdam
Rotterdam police searched a building on Tuesday for reports of the theft of a large quantity of gold bars.
Gold worth millions of euros has been stolen from a safe in the center of Rotterdam. A unit of the Rotterdam police searched a building on Coolsingel on Tuesday in connection with the theft of the gold bars, police reported . A 61-year-old man from Oud-Beijerland was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the gold robbery.
A gold dealer reported the theft several weeks ago. His vault, which should have held the gold bars, turned out to be empty when he commissioned a company to trade the gold. The building on Coolsingel, called Erasmushuis, used to house the Hollandsche Bank-Unie. Now it houses, among other things, a company that rents out safe deposit boxes to individuals.
Multiple searches across the country
What the search revealed Tuesday besides the arrest, police did not disclose. Also present during the search was the police surveillance unit. It remained, partially equipped with automatic weapons, outside the premises. According to the police, several locations around the country are being searched in connection with Tuesday's report.
